We all know that indoor pollution is an important problem for New Eden homeowners. Over time, the air ducts in your home can collect dust and contaminants that it then spreads through your home. When that happens, it’s probably time for your home’s air ducts to be cleaned.

Why Do Air Ducts Need Cleaning?

Indoor air quality is important. All of the indoor air you breathe circulates continuously from room to room through your home’s air ducts. If your air ducts are dirty, moldy or contaminated, you could be breathing in things you don’t want.

There are a lot of components to your home’s air duct system. These include the home’s heating and cooling systems and all of their components, ranging from heating and cooling coils, fan motors and fan housing, housing of the air handling unit, grilles and diffusers, and more. If these systems aren’t properly installed or maintained, the components can become contaminated, and those contaminants can be passed into your home’s air circulation.

Contaminants in your home’s air duct system could mold spores or other microbiological growth, pollen, abnormal amounts of dust or other debris. Some of these contaminants can cause allergic reactions or otherwise negatively affect your and your family’s health.

How Do I Know If My Air Ducts Need Cleaning?

Conditions in every home are different, so there is no set time period where your air ducts always need to be cleaned. However, there are several signs that you can look for to determine if your air ducts need to be cleaned soon.

  • Examine the air vents and air registers in your home regularly for dust buildup. Every air vent dust. As long as it’s dusted regularly, this shouldn’t be a problem. If there is excessive dust clogging the air vent or air register, you may need an air duct cleaning.
  • Open one of your home’s air vents and look inside. If you find any dirt, debris, matted dust, you should have your air ducts cleaned soon.
  • Pull out and inspect your home’s air filters. If they’re caked with dust, the air flow in your home is being choked off. You may need to have your air ducts cleaned.
  • If the air in your home has a moldy smell, or if you can see mold growth on the air vents or inside the air ducts, you should have your air ducts cleaned as soon as possible. Mold spores can make allergies worse and cause respiratory problems, and your home’s air system can be causing mold spores to spread and settle throughout your home.
