If you’re like most homeowners, you probably change your air filters at least a couple of times each year, but you know you don’t do it as often as you should. Why do you need to, anyway? What are these filters doing to make your home safer?

Aside from just keeping your breathing air clean and devoid of harmful debris, filters perform a handful of important jobs that improve the quality of life inside your home. Here are the top three reasons why you need clean filters in your air conditioning systems.

1. Air Filters Prevent Your System From Getting Damaged

Not only do the filters keep dirt and dust out of your home, but they also prevent the debris from traveling into the air conditioner’s evaporator coil. When this coil gets dirty, it can cause the entire system to malfunction or even leak. By switching out the filters often, you’ll prevent future problems with the system and save money on repairs.

Additionally, air filters make sure that the system’s condensate drain can properly remove condensation and moisture from the unit. This prevents worrisome water leaks from occurring, as well as clogs in the HVAC system.
