What Is a Ductless Mini Split System?

A ductless mini-split air conditioner is similar to a regular central air conditioning unit. However, the system does not include any air ducts. Your typical air conditioning system has a series of ducts running throughout the house to deliver air to each room. With a ductless system, the indoor air unit blows warm air over cold evaporator coils. The refrigerant within these coils absorbs the heat and distributes it to the outside unit. Here, the refrigerator dumps all the heat.

Furthermore, with a ductless system, the indoor unit is in the room it is cooling. You would think that, being in one room, a ductless system could not properly cool the entire home. However, that’s not the case. A ductless mini-split system is capable of providing indoor air conditioning via multiple indoor units connected to the outdoor unit.

Ductless Mini-Split System Advantages

There are numerous advantages of a ductless mini-split system, including the small size and flexibility for zoning, heating, and cooling capabilities in each room. There are many models available today that offer four indoor air units, which means four zones or rooms that are cooled and heated throughout the year by a single outdoor unit.

Some additional benefits to the system include:

  • Installation – Overall, a ductless mini-split system is easier to install than a central air conditioning unit. The connection between the indoor and outdoor units just requires a three-inch hole in the wall for the conduit. If necessary, you can have the outdoor unit as far as 50 feet from the indoor unit.
  • Ductless – A ductless system does not utilize air ducts to move cool or warm air through the house. By removing the entire ductwork, you can decrease energy consumption by nearly 30 percent, which accounts for duct losses in typical HVAC systems.
  • Flexibility – You likely have a specific style and décor in mind for your home; one that doesn’t include a bulky air conditioning system. A mini-split system can accommodate any aesthetic style. Plus, indoor units are relatively small, high-tech components that aren’t ugly to look at.

Is a Ductless System Right for You?

There are many applications that are perfect for a ductless mini-split system. For example, if you are renovating your home and installing a new addition (such as a sunroom or garage apartment), a mini-split unit is a great fit. Likewise, if you wish to downsize your home’s HVAC system, then a ductless mini-split system could work well.
