The Ins and Outs of Zone Heating in Minneapolis

Nov 1 ,2017

heating zoneWhen deciding what type of heating and cooling system you want your heating contractor to install, it’s important to consider multi-zone heating and cooling. A multi-zone heating and cooling system works differently than standard units.

What is a Zone Heating and Air System?

Electronically controlled dampers in your ductwork work to open up your room’s vents when appropriate. This is accomplished using separate thermostats in each room, which can be installed by an HVAC contractor. When the temperature is not where you set it, the damper goes to work by opening up and pushing air out until it reaches the right temperature. This probably sounds a lot like a regular heating and cooling system, but the difference is the multi-zoning capability. A multi-zoning unit means you have separate zones in your home that can be individually set to different temperatures. Why would this be beneficial to homeowners? Read on for two reasons:

Comfort

The first benefit that likely comes to mind is that of comfort for homeowners. There’s a lot of reasons people would sometimes want different temperatures in different rooms. For example, cooking in the kitchen can often make the room hot, especially if the oven is on. With a zoned heating and cooling system, you can make sure you are comfortable without making others in different rooms uncomfortable. Another room that you may want to keep cooler than the rest is the bedroom, as many people sleep best in cooler temperatures. An air conditioning contractor will install separate thermostats for each zone in your home.

Savings on Utilities

When you can control the amount of heating and air each room gets, you will save money on your utilities. In the winter, you will only heat the rooms you are using at the time and cut down the heating in the other rooms. For example, you may have a guest bedroom that is only used occasionally. So, you’ll have the ability to save money by not heating that room when it’s not in use. A heating repair service technician can give you more tips on energy efficiency.
