How to Lighten the Load on Your Air Conditioner

Aug 18 ,2014

Lighten the LoadThankfully for many of us, we’re in the home stretch of summer. It won’t be very long until crisp fall breezes are blowing and our AC systems get a much-needed break for a few months. Until then, however, we’re still going to have to deal with quite a few very warm days that can tax even the toughest air conditioner. Here are a few things you can do to make life a little easier for your AC unit before it goes into “hibernation” until next year.

Simple Tips that Can Help A Lot

By reducing the size of the job your air conditioner has to do, you can help it work better and even save some money on your monthly energy bill.

  • Make your home more energy efficient by sealing air leaks, adding insulation and shading windows. If you waste air or it gets too hot inside, your AC will obviously have to work a great deal harder to keep you comfortable.
  • If you are considering having a new roof, ask about “cool” roofing. It can make a sizable difference on how hard your AC has to work.
  • Shut off electrical items you don’t need, such as appliances and lights. High-definition televisions, for example, can generate a great deal of heat and raise your indoor temperature. Also, try to wait until the cooler evening hours to use your washer and dryer. Also, consider having exhaust fans installed to remove heat and humidity from your bathroom and kitchen.

What to do

These are just a few of the things you can do to help reduce the load on your air conditioner. Before next cooling season starts, don’t forget to have your unit maintained by a professional. At Northern’s One Hour Heating and Air Conditioning, we can send someone out to completely check your system from top to bottom. That way, any issues can be addressed so that you can rest easy knowing your system will get you through yet another hot summer.
