Nov 12 ,2014

install a thermostatUsing a programmable thermostat in your home is the easiest way to save money on your heating and cooling bill. At OH Northern’s Ramsey Minneapolis, we encourage homeowners to learn how to do simple improvements on their own. Here is a quick guide on how to install a thermostat in your home to avoid unnecessary energy consumption while you’re away.

Step 1: Disconnect

First, turn off your thermostat. Then, go to your circuit breaker and switch off the power to your furnace. Remove the old thermostat cover and disconnect the wires. Keep in mind that some older thermostats use mercury-filled glass tubes, so be careful when removing the unit.

Step 2: Label

Note where the old wires were connected and mark them with the labels from your new thermostat. Focus on the letter designations rather than the colors. To prevent the wires from falling into the wall, tie them together or secure them to the side.

Step 3: Install

Remove the new base and position it where the old one was. If you to know how to install a thermostat to make it look professional, use a level to make sure your base is straight. Mark the mounting holes on the wall, feed the wires through the plate, and screw the unit in place. If you’re dealing with drywall, use anchors for a more secure fit.

Step 4: Reconnect

Connect your labeled wires to the ones on your new terminal. Again, the colors may be different, so make sure to follow your manufacturer’s wiring instructions carefully. Next, install batteries if needed, and attach the new unit to your wall plate. Turn on the power and program your new thermostat according to its instructions.
