How Long Does the Average HVAC System Last?

Here is our answer

Average HVAC SystemIt’s one of the most common questions we get at Northern’s One Hour Heating and Air Conditioning – “How long will my HVAC system last?” Unfortunately, we oftentimes can’t answer that question accurately without seeing how your system looks and get a feel for how it’s operating. But over the years, of course, we’ve seen thousands of HVAC systems, so we can at least provide a general answer for how long they should continue to work.

Factors to Consider

When trying to determine how long your HVAC system will keep working, a lot of factors need to be considered. These include:

  • How the heating and cooling capacity was determined.
  • Whether the system was the original one installed in the home.
  • The manner in which the system was designed.
  • The quality of the installation.
  • The amount of maintenance performed on the system.
  • The quality of the equipment.

Typically, you can probably expect your heating and cooling system to last around 15 years. However, we’ve seen instances where an HVAC system was so poorly maintained – or not maintained at all – that it only lasted about six years. On the other hand, we’ve seen systems last 20 years or even longer because they were properly designed and installed, and the owner had maintenance performed on a regular basis. Having yours maintained by a professional will not only ensure that all components are working properly, but also that any minor issues are uncovered before they turn into major problems.

If you are purchasing a new home and having a system installed, it is critically important that you choose the right contractor. The reason is that, again, sizing, design and installation are critical factors in determining the lifespan of the system. In addition, regular maintenance will help the system avoid excessive wear and tear and also keep it clean.
