Boiler Maintenance Tips

Boiler MaintenanceThere’s nothing much worse than having to endure days of no heat because your boiler malfunctioned. When the weather gets bitterly cold, it could even become a health hazard. If you want to avoid this fate, it’s extremely important that you perform boiler maintenance on a regular basis. At Northern’s One Hour Heating & Air Conditioning, we provide maintenance services that will keep your unit running smoothly. However, if you are handy with tools, you can more than likely handle some of these tasks on your own.

Here’s What to Do

  • Check the flues and air vents – If your air vent is blocked, your boiler won’t be able to operate effectively – especially if you have a gas boiler. When dirt accumulates in your vents or your flue, that can result in a lack of heat in your home.
  • Check the water level – Every two weeks, check to make sure your boiler has enough water. If it doesn’t, this can cause a serious problem; you may even need to purchase a new unit. This is also a safety concern, because if an accident takes place it could endanger you and your children. When you check the water, make sure the pilot light is on. If it’s low, you may have a plumbing issue.
  • Check for leaks – This is a very important aspect of boiler maintenance as well. If your unit is leaking gas or oil, you should call a professional to make the necessary adjustments.
  • De-scale the boiler – If your home has hard water that can cause issues with the accumulation of scale, which will keep the unit from working as it should. Over time, this scale will reduce the boiler’s ability to heat properly.

These are just a few of the boiler maintenance steps you can take to help ensure your unit will get through another winter. If you would rather leave this to a professional or you ever need any sort of heating system repair, call Northern’s One Hour Heating & Air Conditioning at 763-412-1197 or contact us online.
