Common Air Handler Problems

Air Handler Issues

Air Handler ProblemsThe air handler is, for lack of a better term, “where the rubber meets the road” when it comes to making your home comfortable. It is usually located in an area such as a garage or attic, and connects to the ductwork that distributes air through your home. However, this extremely important component of a heating and cooling system can, like any other piece of equipment, have problems. Northern’s One Hour Heating & Air Conditioning would like to share some of the signs you may be having problems with yours.

Obstructions

One of the worst problems that can happen to an air handler is obstruction of airflow. Typically the culprit is an air filter that has become clogged or dirty. It’s also one of the simplest problems to avoid. Just about anyone can clean or replace an air filter; you should do so monthly to make sure all of your air handler’s components are as clean as possible. Many advanced models of digital thermostats will flash a warning notice when you need to change your filter.

Dirty Evaporator Coils

This goes hand-in-hand with the problem of a dirty air filter. If the evaporator coils in your air handler become dirty, they can freeze and cause serious problems. This is a particularly serious issue in a cooling system, because frozen coils can do damage to the compressor. If the damage is extensive enough, you may wind up needing an entirely new air conditioner.

Blower Motor Failure

This is, unfortunately, another common problem that can have many causes. The capacitor or control board could cause the blower motor to fail, or it could simply be that the motor itself has gone bad. If this is the case, you will probably need to have a new motor installed.

The experts with Northern’s One Hour Heating & Air Conditioning are ready to handle any sort of problem you may be experiencing with your air handler.
